Setting The Terms: How To Determine The Value Of The Content You Create

Never smiled like this since I was a young girl. How about you? What is your story?

In the age of digital content, where every scroll brings forth a huge variety of articles, videos, and graphics, how do you determine the value of what you create? As creators, especially those with adventurous hearts, understanding the worth of our content isn’t just about monetary compensation. It’s about recognizing the impact, the reach, and the change our content can bring about. Knowing your value is pivotal, not just for fair compensation but for self-worth and growth in the digital nomad journey. Back then, I struggled with determining the worth of my work. Today, I want to share insights on how you, too, can set the terms and truly understand the value of the content you create.  Let’s embark on this exploration together.

The Engagement Depth Metric

Instead of just counting likes or shares, measure the depth of engagement. Create a scoring system. For instance, a comment might be worth 5 points, a share 10, and a personal message 20. A higher score indicates deeper engagement.

While likes and shares give a snapshot of content popularity, they don’t necessarily reflect its impact. A reader might like a post without fully reading it, but if they comment or share it with a personal note, it indicates a deeper connection.

Analyze Engagement Patterns: Over time, track which content pieces accumulate the highest scores. These are your deeply engaging pieces.

Seek Qualitative Feedback: Occasionally, reach out to engaged users for feedback. Why did they comment or share? What about the content that resonated with them?

Refine & Repeat: Use your findings to refine your content strategy, aiming to produce more content that drives deep engagement.

Do you also know your work’s value beyond numbers? Here’s why you should also know its intangibles

While metrics like views, likes, and shares provide a tangible measure, the real value often lies in the intangible. Does your content resonate with its audience? Does it inspire, educate, or evoke emotion? The most memorable pieces of content are those that touch the heart. When your work resonates emotionally with your audience, it creates a lasting bond. This emotional connection is intangible, yet it’s what makes readers come back for more, fostering loyalty and trust.

In a world saturated with content, what sets you apart is your unique voice and authenticity. This genuineness can’t be quantified, but it’s what makes your content stand out and attract a dedicated audience. Think of your favorite book or movie. It might not be a bestseller or a blockbuster, but something about it speaks to you on a personal level. That connection, that feeling, represents the intangible worth. As content creators, embracing this intangible value empowers us to create with purpose, passion, and authenticity.

Another aspect of your content that you might have been overlooking: The Repurpose Potential

A well-researched article or video shouldn’t just fade away after its initial publication. Repurposing ensures your content remains alive, reaching new audiences and platforms over time. High repurposing potential often correlates with high content value. Also, different people consume content differently. While some prefer reading in-depth articles, others might lean towards podcasts or infographics. Repurposing caters to these varied preferences.

How to harness your content’s repurposing material

Identify Core Content: Start by identifying your evergreen content or pieces that have garnered significant engagement. These are prime candidates for repurposing.

Break It Down: A comprehensive guide can be broken down into a series of shorter blog posts or infographics. Conversely, a series of related articles can be combined into an e-book or a webinar.

Switch Mediums: Convert blog posts into podcasts, videos, or even slide presentations. Conversely, transcribe video content into articles or guides.

Update and Refresh: As you repurpose, ensure you update any outdated information. This keeps the content relevant across platforms and over time.

Cross-Promote: Whenever you repurpose content, cross-promote it on various platforms. If you’ve turned a blog post into a podcast, promote it on your blog and vice versa.

In a sea of content, originality also stands out

The digital world is saturated with content. To make an impact, your content needs to offer something fresh, something that hasn’t been rehashed a thousand times.Unique content is more likely to be shared, discussed, and remembered. It sparks curiosity and conversation.

Challenge the status quo

Before creating content on a topic, research existing content. Identify gaps, misconceptions, or areas that haven’t been explored in depth. Don’t be afraid to present a contrarian view or challenge widely accepted notions. Of course, ensure your arguments are well-researched and backed by evidence. Use tools like Copyscape to ensure your content’s uniqueness. Also, regularly assess if your content offers fresh perspectives or insights not easily found elsewhere.

Before negotiating with clients or setting prices, take a moment to assess the value you bring. Consider your expertise, the uniqueness of your perspective, and the effort involved. Don’t undersell yourself. Your content, your terms.
